Because they may have different symptoms than boys do, some girls with Asperger’s syndrome don’t get diagnosed.

Is one implication of this article that the 4-to-1 male/female sex ratio for ASD is a consequence of less diagnosis for girls — meaning the gender ratio isn’t actually 4-to-1?

And any readers shed light on this?

As it stands, the author doesn’t go this far, merely says later diagnosis occurs for girls. This reminds of the controversy over ADHD diagnoses for girls about 15 years ago. Girls were under-diagnosed for ADHD because they weren’t as disruptive in the classroom.

sixty years after it was first identified, autism remains one of the most puzzling of childhood disorders. its cause or causes are still unknown.

boys are four times as likely as girls to have the disorder… this sex ratio has led one researcher, dr. simon baron-cohen, director of the autism research center at cambridge university in England, to speculate that autism is a form of ”extreme maleness,” <but the theory has yet to be supported by research.

in the 2003 fiscal year, the national institutes of health spent an estimated $81.3 million on autism research, compared with $9.6 million in 1993.
