Caveman and Credit Cards

Posted by lawman2 on December 7, 2008

Bill Gates Goes to School

Posted by centered2 on December 7, 2008

We know by now what works for at-risk kids. The challenge is trying to replicate it.

Buckle up! Bill Gates, wearing an expensive necktie and looking uncharacteristically formal, is now bringing the same high-speed, high-beam focus to American education that he once brought to computers and, more recently, to international aid. He called President-elect Obama last week and reports back cheerily that Obama “said all the right things” about including big money for education in the stimulus package and making fundamental school reform (not the fake kind pushed by teachers unions) a priority. Word is, Obama may even ask Gates to serve on a new high-level educational-advisory panel he’s noodling, which would be quite a change for a guy who generally doesn’t do committees. When I lumped Gates in with the “bomb throwers” on education, he chuckled and didn’t disagree. Read the rest of this entry »

World, Don’t You Worry

Posted by centered2 on December 7, 2008

Barack Obama is busy burnishing America’s most important brand.

Calif. City at Loss to Explain Shackled Teen Case

Posted by centered2 on December 7, 2008

In this Dec. 4, 2008 file photo, Kelly Layne Lau, 30, and her husband Michael Schumacher, 34, appear in a Stockton, Calif., courtroom. Schumacher and Lau stand accused of more than a dozen charges, including torture, kidnapping and child abuse. The alleged abuse of the 16-year-old boy who had escaped from a group home occurred in a well-maintained, two-story Tudor-style house with wreaths on the front door and a Christmas tree in the window. City officials and child-abuse experts don’t understand how the abduction and torture of a teenage boy could have gone undetected for more than a year in this middle-class community once dubbed the second-safest in Northern California.

“Unless this child was chained in the basement for the duration, it’s just not possible that somebody could not have seen something,” said Lindy Turner-Hardin, executive director of the nonprofit Child Abuse Prevention Council of San Joaquin County. Read the rest of this entry »
