Barack Obama wants to cut the federal deficit in half by the end of his first term, mostly by scaling back Iraq war spending, raising taxes on the wealthiest and streamlining government, an administration official said Saturday as the president worked to finalize his first budget request.

Taleban supporters are in plain sight in Mingora, in the Swat valley Taleban rebels in Pakistan’s Swat valley have agreed to a “permanent ceasefire”, a senior official has said. Syed Mohammad Javed, commissioner of Malakand, which includes Swat, revealed the deal but gave no details. There has been no confirmation from the Taleban. Swat, once one of Pakistan’s most popular holiday destinations, has been blighted by violence since 2007. Reports of the pact come a week after a 10-day ceasefire and a deal to implement Sharia law in parts of Swat.

The English navy at around the time of the Armada was evolving revolutionary new tactics, according to new research.

Tests on cannon recovered from an Elizabethan warship suggest it carried powerful cast iron guns, of uniform size, firing standard ammunition.

“This marked the beginning of a kind of mechanisation of war,” says naval historian Professor Eric Grove of Salford University.

“The ship is now a gun platform in a way that it wasn’t before.”
