1. The Disappearance of Caylee Anthony

– The two-year-old toddler went missing sometime in June, but her mother, Casey, 22, did not report her missing. In fact, Caylee’s grandmother, Cindy, called law enforcement a month later and alerted them to the situation. On December 11, Caylee’s remains were found and her mother has been accused of her murder after lying to police and claiming a nanny kidnapped little Caylee. Circumstantial evidence appears to be overwhelming that the young mother murdered her little daughter, and Casey’s trial should take place in early 2009.

2. The Murder of Anne Presley – The popular Arkansas anchorwoman was badly beaten after a man broke into her home. She never recovered from the attack and died five days later. Curtis Lavelle Vance has been charged with the crime.

3. Greyhound Bus Decapitation – Like something out of a horror movie, Tim McLean, 22, was stabbed and beheaded on a Greyhound bus traveling through Canada. Vince Weiguang Li, 40, a Chinese immigrant severed McLean’s head and then held it up for other passengers to see. Li has been charged with second-degree murder.

4. The Austrian Basement of Horror – It was discovered in 2008 that Josef Fritzl, 73, had kept his daughter Elisabeth, now 42, captive in a cellar for 24 years. He repeatedly raped her fathering seven children with his daughter. Fritzl disposed of one of the children’s body in a furnace after it died of an illness. He is charged with rape, murder, slavery, and false imprisonment. Fritzl’s wife and the mother of Elisabeth claims to have no knowledge of what was occurring.

5. Family of American Idol Slaughtered – In October, Oscar winner Jennifer Hudson’s mother and brother were murdered in their Englewood, Illinois home. Hudson’s little 7-year-old nephew was kidnapped from the home and found later in an abandoned SUV, savagely shot to death. William Balfour, Hudson’s estranged brother-in-law is accused of all three brutal murders.

6. College Student Murdered – In January, Santa Barbara City College student Brianna Denison vanished from her friend’s home in Reno, Nevada while visiting on winter break. Her dead body was found in a field in South Reno only a month later. James Michael Biela was arrested for Denison’s murder.

7. Accusations of Child Molestation on Texas Ranch – Yearning for Zion Ranch was raided in April after a tip from a 16-year-old girl who called authorities claiming she had been abused by the sect. The calls were actually made by an adult woman who was later accused of perpetrating a hoax against the church. Many children living on the ranch were taken from their parents, but after the Texas Supreme Court ruled the state had acted improperly, many children were returned to their homes. Nevertheless, several men remain in custody, indicted on a variety charges.

8. Karma for Simpson? – In 2007, O.J. Simpson was accused of breaking into a Las Vegas hotel room with several other men, one of whom was armed with a gun. In the hotel room were sports memorabilia dealers who Simpson believed unlawfully held his personal property. For this act, Simpson was found guilty in 2008 of armed robbery and kidnapping and will not be eligible for parole for at least nine years. Simpson was acquitted of murdering his ex-wife Nicole Brown Simpson and her friend Ron Goldman in 1994, and many who believe him guilty of that crime feel Simpson is finally getting what he deserves. Ironically, Simpson was found guilty of the recent armed robbery and kidnapping exactly thirteen years after he was acquitted of the savage double murder.

9. $360,000,000,000 Check – In April, Charles Ray Fuller, 21, was accused of forgery after he tried to cash a $360 billion check at a Fort Worth, Texas Chase bank. Fuller claimed his girlfriend’s mother was helping him begin a record business and gave him the check. The woman stated she had not written Fuller any checks, let alone one for $360 billion.

10. The Governor and the Call Girl – New York Governor Elliot Spitzer, who had relentlessly pursued corruption and wrongdoing while in office, was caught arranging to meet a high-priced escort at a Washington, DC hotel. A federal wiretap brought the governor down, and he resigned from his position after his dalliances were revealed.
