Kentucky Coach Pleads Not Guilty in Player’s Heat Death

LOUISVILLE, Ky. —  A Kentucky high school football coach has pleaded not guilty to reckless homicide in the heat-related death of a player who collapsed at a hot August practice.

A judge released David Jason Stinson without bond Monday following his arraignment in Jefferson Circuit Court.

The family of 15-year-old Pleasure Ridge Park High player Max Gilpin attended the hearing but did not speak to reporters. Gilpin collapsed Aug. 20 while running sprints and died three days later at a hospital.

A grand jury Thursday indicted Stinson in the sophomore’s death.

Gilpin’s death was one of six heat-related deaths in high school and college athletics in 2008. But the criminal charge against Stinson appears to be unprecedented.
