(06-01) 04:00 PDT Wichita, Kan. — Dr. George Tiller – one of the few U.S. physicians who performed late-term abortions and long a target of violent extremists as well as principled opponents – was shot and killed Sunday in the lobby of his church.

A 51-year-old suspect, identified by sheriff’s deputies as Scott Roeder, was arrested three hours after the shooting in a Kansas City suburb about 170 miles from Wichita. Police said he would likely be charged today with one count of murder and two counts of aggravated assault.

Tiller, 67, was a lightning rod in the struggle over legalized abortion and had previously been the victim of violence. In 1993, he was shot in both arms by an abortion protester as he drove away from his clinic. In 1986, his Women’s Health Care Services clinic was severely damaged in a bomb blast. In 1991, the clinic was blockaded for six weeks by anti-abortion protesters.

And this month, Tiller’s attorneys told the Associated Press that the doctor recently had asked the FBI to investigate an incident in which vandals had cut wires to security cameras, cut holes in the roof and plugged downspouts at the clinic, resulting in thousands of dollars in damage.

In addition to fending off abortion protesters for years, Tiller had been pursued by public officials opposed to abortion. In March, he was acquitted of charges that he broke a Kansas law requiring a second doctor to affirm that a late-term abortion is necessary to preserve the health of the woman. State law requires that the second doctor be financially and legally independent from the first physician.

In a trial that lasted five days – and in which the jury took less than an hour to return its verdict – Tiller was cleared of charges that he had improper ties to Dr. Ann Kristin Neuhaus.

Sunday, Neuhaus said that she had expected further violence after Tiller’s acquittal. “I knew it was going to antagonize these people that he quote, unquote, got off the hook,” she said. “Dr. Tiller really was a warrior. He was a quiet, persistent, capable visionary, a true leader.”

Parishioner Adam Watkins, 20, said he was sitting in the congregation at Reformation Lutheran Church when he heard a small pop at the start of the service. Another usher came in and told the congregation to remain seated, then escorted Tiller’s wife out. “When she got to the back doors, we heard her scream, and so we knew something bad had happened,” Watkins said.

Later, Tiller’s attorneys released a statement from Tiller’s wife, Jeanne, his four children and 10 grandchildren.

“Today we mourn the loss of our husband, father and grandfather,” it said. “This is particularly heart wrenching because George was shot down in his house of worship, a place of peace. Our loss is also a loss for the city of Wichita and women across America.”

Phill Kline, the former Kansas attorney general whose investigations led to the charges being filed against Tiller, decried the killing. “I am stunned by this lawless and violent act which must be condemned,” he said.

Warren Hern, a Colorado physician and close friend of Tiller’s, who described himself now as “the only doctor in the world” who performs very late-term abortions, said Tiller’s death was predictable.

“I think it’s the inevitable consequence of more than 35 years of constant anti-abortion terrorism, harassment and violence. George is the fifth American doctor to be assassinated. I get messages from these people saying, ‘Don’t bother wearing a bulletproof vest, we’re going for a head shot.’ ”

When President Obama was elected last fall, Hern predicted that anti-abortion violence would increase, he said. Because Obama supports legalized abortion, Hern said, its foes “have lost ground. … They want the doctors dead, and they invite people to assassinate us.”

Obama said he was “shocked and outraged” by the killing. “However profound our differences as Americans over difficult issues such as abortion,” he said in a statement, “they cannot be resolved by heinous acts of violence.”

The killing spotlights the notion that common ground can be found between proponents of legalized abortion and those who oppose it.

“It is cold-blooded, vicious actions like today’s assassination that make it hard for those of us in the pro-choice community to find common ground with those on the other side,” said Kelli Conlin, president of NARAL Pro-Choice New York. “It is lawless, violent behavior like this that makes us fear for our lives and our families. When they sit down across from us, they have no reason to believe that we come to the table with violent intentions. Today is a brutal reminder that we are not privileged to have the same sense of security.”

Abortion violence

Other recent cases of abortion-related violence:

April 25, 2007: Authorities say Paul Ross Evans placed a homemade bomb in the parking lot of the Austin Women’s Health Center in Texas. A bomb squad disposed of the device, which contained 2 pounds of nails. There were no injuries.

Oct. 23, 1998: Dr. Barnett Slepian is fatally shot in his home in a suburb of Buffalo, N.Y. Militant abortion opponent James Kopp is convicted of the murder in 2003 and sentenced to 25 years to life in prison.

Jan. 29, 1998: A bomb explodes just outside a Birmingham, Ala., abortion clinic, killing a police officer and wounding several others. Eric Rudolph later pleads guilty to that incident and the deadly bombing at the 1996 Olympics in Atlanta.

Jan. 16, 1997: Two bomb blasts an hour apart rock an Atlanta building containing an abortion clinic. Seven people are injured. Rudolph is charged by federal authorities in October 1998.

Dec. 30, 1994: John Salvi opens fire with a rifle inside two Boston-area abortion clinics, killing two receptionists and wounding five others. Sentenced to life without parole, he kills himself in prison in 1996.

Nov. 8, 1994: Dr. Garson Romalis, who performs abortions in Vancouver, British Columbia, is shot in the leg at his home.

July 29, 1994: Dr. John Bayard Britton and his volunteer escort, James Barrett, are slain outside a Pensacola, Fla., abortion clinic. Barrett’s wife, June, is wounded in the attack. Paul Hill, 40, a former minister and anti-abortion activist, is later convicted of murder and sentenced to death.

March 10, 1993: Dr. David Gunn is shot to death outside a Pensacola, Fla., clinic, becoming the first U.S. doctor killed during an anti-abortion demonstration. Michael Griffin is convicted and is serving a life sentence.

i wonder what christian church Scott Roeder belonged to?
i am sure he felt god wanted him to do it.
i wonder if he is “born again”?

In response to Kelli Conlin, president of NARAL Pro-Choice New York…
It’s the Pro Choice people who kill on a daily basis…. this killing by a Pro life person who was not a law abiding citizen and doesn’t represent the Pro Life community, was a rare occurance.

    From a CNN article…

Operation Rescue, which has led numerous demonstrations at Tiller’s clinic, called the shooting as a “cowardly act.” And the National Right to Life Committee, the largest U.S. anti-abortion group, said it “unequivocally condemns any such acts of violence regardless of motivation.”

“The pro-life movement works to protect the right to life and increase respect for human life,” it said. “The unlawful use of violence is directly contrary to that goal.”

But Operation Rescue founder Randall Terry, who is no longer affiliated with the group, called Tiller “a mass murderer.”

“We grieve for him that he did not have time to properly prepare his soul to face God,” Terry said in a written statement. “I am more concerned that the Obama administration will use Tiller’s killing to intimidate pro-lifers into surrendering our most effective rhetoric and actions. Abortion is still murder, and we still must call abortion by its proper name.”

and don’t all aborted babies go str8 to heaven anyway?
    so what is the problem?
god knows they are going to be aborted before they are even conceived.

then he goes on to say it should have never happened, it is just a lone nutcase, and then further derides Tiller the baby killer for being in church.

What is a late term abortion CNN askes? I really wanted to hear this… a perfect liveral bias test…. “…. the cervix is dialated and ‘medicines or chemicals’ are injected into the uterus”. That was it… their “lets get down to it” definition of a late term abortion. What a sad joke. But it didn’t surprise me, I already knew that CNN was biased.

    I don’t get your points D & P… you’re not making sense.

P, I think you are saying that Bill contradicted himself? Where?

Once again Bill is correct… what happened to this abortion doctor is only going to cause the Pro life community to look bad and encourage sympathy for the other side. I don’t understand your confusion Dorian.

Bill says that probably no one in the Pro Life community is crying over Tiller’s death. I’m sure that is true. It’s really easy to imagine all of the babies who will NOT be murdered now by his hands. Those with legitimately QUESTIONABLE viability!! Yeah… so sad that we are not crying for this “doctor”. I have to ask…. WHO, on the pro choice side, is crying for these babies who not only suffered a HORRIBLE death but had there entire lives taken away from them ???

Bill condemns killing of babies and also vigilante killings no matter how guilty the person is. Where’s the contradictions??

And Bill didn’t condemn him for being in church, he said that instead of acting as usher, he should have been on his knees asking for forgiveness.

I personally find it increadibly confusing for someone like him to be a member of a Christian church. Now THERE’S a contradiction!!

I know you all “voted” to not have any BK postings for a month but you guys quoted him and it’s only fair to post the entire devotional to get the proper context….

The assassination of abortion doctor George Tiller has just insured the
culture of death in this nation will flourish! I am sure many who fight for
the life of the unborn did not shed any tears upon hearing the news that one
of the most notorious abortion doctors in the history of the nation, George
Tiller of Wichita, Kansas, also known as “Tiller the baby killer,” had been
assassinated. The reality is, the killing of Tiller was the greatest gift
our pro-death President and those in the pro-death movement could have ever
received. Tiller’s murder has insured the pro-death movement in this nation
    will flourish like never before.

Let me take this opportunity to say that what happened to George Tiller
should NOT have happened. People who are pro life are just that, PRO LIFE!
We don’t believe in bombing abortion clinics and we certainly don’t believe
in or condone the killing of abortion doctors. The Bible says, “Vengeance
is mine sayeth the Lord.” The sick human beings that kill babies for a
living will one day stand before God, and trust me, He will judge them.
There is no excuse ever for vigilante justice and the man who killed Tiller
should be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law. Pray for him, since
he needs Jesus. HE IS NOT PART OF THE PRO-LIFE MOVEMENT OR HE WOULD NOT
    HAVE MURDERED TILLER!

Let me lay out for you what you will now be hearing. The media that
supports the killing of babies, has always characterized those in the
pro-life movement as nutcases. The head of Homeland Security, Janet
    Napolitano,
recently issued a report stating that pro lifers were a threat to our
national security. People who support the life of the unborn are often
lumped in with those few sick people in the past who have bombed abortion
clinics and killed abortion doctors. The killing of Tiller has now given
the media a license to categorize every one who stands for life as an
abortion clinic bomber and murdered of abortion doctors.

Almost as disgusting as the killing of Tiller, was to see how fast King
Obama came out with a statement. It was actually amazing that this guy
flies his wife to New York for a nice dinner and Broadway show Saturday
night at taxpayers’ expense, and is able to issue a statement early on a
Sunday afternoon regarding the death of an abortion doctor within a few
hours of his murder. He was too eager to denounce Tiller’s killing, clearly
laying the blame at the feet of those who condemn him and others who support
the slaughter of innocent babies. He put those in the pro-life movement on
notice a few weeks ago at Notre Dame, and the Tiller killing has now given
him carte blanche to marginalize and silence those in the pro-life movement.

So when confronted with the sin of abortion, what should that action be?
First, prayer. PRAYER CHANGES THINGS! I can only imagine the number of
prayers that went up every day during the time slavery was legal in this
nation, that this inhumane practice would end. Don’t ever underestimate the
power of prayer and EVERY child of God must pray daily for this nation to
get out of the business of killing babies.

Second, communicate to others the Truth of God’s Word. It is God Himself who
calls abortion murder. Those who know Christ cannot sit back and be silent
while people support this sin. Wherever the discussion of abortion exists,
be it in your home with family members, at work or school, out with friends,
or in the public square, a child of God MUST speak out for righteousness and
call this sin what it is…MURDER!

Third, evangelism. Some of you may be confused how evangelism has anything
to do with the abortion issue, but it is THE answer to this and every other
issue. You see, when a person is saved, the Bible says they become a “new
creature in Christ.” They literally are a new creation and the “old things
pass away.” When a person is saved they get a new heart, they get new
desires, they start to live their life in obedience to God instead of in
rebellion to Him. The ultimate answer to the abortion issue is to get people
saved since they would no longer make the choice to kill their baby and the
abortion mills would close down due to a lack of business.

AGAIN, EVERY PERSON THAT KNOWS JESUS HAS THE MANDATE FROM OUR LORD TO SHARE
THE HOPE AND LOVE WE HAVE IN CHRIST WITH THE LOST. THIS IS NOT AN OPTION, IT
    IS A COMMANDMENT!

As a side note, I find it interesting that Tiller was killed while acting as
an usher at his church. I wonder what kind of church allows an avowed baby
killer to serve in the church. I wonder how many sermons this pastor
delivered that killing babies is murder. There is no doubt that Tiller
needed to be in church, but not as an usher, in the pews coming under the
conviction of the Holy Spirit to stop killing babies. It is sad that most
churches who claim to be of Christ, don’t speak out on the killing of
innocent babies, the sin of homosexuality, or other sins that have sent this
nation into a spiritual abyss. The comprised church of 2009 is where the
bulk of the blame lies for the spiritual condition of our land.

I love you and care about you so much. The fight for the life of the unborn
got much more difficult yesterday. Please pray for George Tiller’s family
and that they will turn to God during this time for comfort. Please pray for
the man who killed Tiller, that he will turn to the Lord, repent, and find
peace in Christ. Please also pray for those who fight for the life of
the unborn. All those who support the life of those innocent babies will
now be mocked in the media and categorized as terrorists, killers, and
nutcases. WE CANNOT LET THE KILLING OF TILLER INTIMIDATE US INTO SILENCE!

I have tried to tell you for quite a while that the battle for the soul of
this nation is in high gear. Satan is about death. Only satan could have
masterminded this insidious event that on the surface may seem like a
blessing to some, but in reality is a curse to those who love life. We have
the most pro-death President in the nation’s history, and those in the
pro-death movement have been energized and emboldened. They will use the
killing of Tiller to become even more bold and brazen in their pro-death
agenda. The black cloud of death is hanging over this nation. Sadly, with
the assassination of Tiller, that cloud got a little darker yesterday.

    In His love and service,
Your friend and brother in Christ,
    Bill Keller

From the Huffington Post… Author Frank Schaeffer says…

“Hyperbole from the pulpit from religious leaders, be it from my father or from President Obama’s former pastor the Rev. Wright, is par for the course. But once in a while someone “does something” about it and then everyone says that they were only speaking metaphorically or “spiritually” when they called for violence or for the overthrow the state or when they said things like “God damn America!” or that “abortionists are murderers like Hitler!”

“When evangelicals on the right call President Obama a socialist, a racist, anti-American, an abortionist, not a real American, and, echoing the former Vice President, someone who is weakening America’s defenses and making us less safe, the logical conclusion is violence. If you take these words literally you might pull the trigger to “make America safe” and/or free us from communism or to even protect us from — what some “Christian” leaders claim — Obama as the Antichrist.”

“The logical conclusion is violence” ?? Logical?? What?? logical for the unstable is what I think he meant to say. Violence is the logical conclusion for thinking that someone is not a real American or a socialist or a racist? May God help us if he was correct. This is the exact crux of this problem…. making the direct link from disagreement to violence… this is a gross error and misconception. This is obscenely irresponsible and ignorant. There IS a difference between “when they called for violence or for the overthrow the state”….AND…”or when they said things like “God damn America!” or that “abortionists are murderers like Hitler!”

We need to perpetuate the idiology of non violence amidst disagreements…NOT the idiology of not disagreeing because of the remote possibility of an isolated unstable individual commiting violence as the result of someone else’s personal beliefs!! This is more of that skrewed up liberal dogma. This is the liberals trying to force society to abide by their beliefs. If they get away with it, then our society today is severely lacking intelligence.

A call to violence and saying that abortionists are murderers is NOT the same thing… one IS ADVOCATING VIOLENCE the other is a personal belief. The government is now going to tell us what to believe??? Isn’t this yet another liberal no no??!!

Yes, Frank Schaeffer, you and your father can be held partially responsible for what happened to Tiller… you DID promote violence in your books and speeches. Don’t also try to put the blame on the Pro life people who never called for violence against abortionists.

on rachel maddow last nite, a colleague of dr tiller was talking about his work.
a lot of the abortions he performed where what e_e had been talking about. the fetus had already died in the womb, but legally it is called an abortion.
also young girls 10 & 11 yrs old that are victims of incest or rape.
these young girls never spoke up until too late.

anyway, he didn’t abort babies in the third trimester just because the baby mama decided at the last moment not to have a baby.

  24. Just from a brief look around:

In the U.S., violence directed toward abortion providers has killed at least 9 people, including 5 doctors, 2 clinic employees, a security guard, and a clinic escort.
since 1977 in the United States and Canada, there have been 17 attempted murders, 383 death threats, 153 incidents of assault or battery, and 3 kidnappings committed against abortion providers.

The first letters claiming to contain anthrax were mailed to U.S. clinics in October 1998, a few days after the Slepian shooting, and since then, there have been a total of 655 such bioterror threats made against abortion providers.

Since 1977 in the United States and Canada, property crimes committed against abortion providers have included 41 bombings, 173 arsons, 91 attempted bombings or arsons, 619 bomb threats, 1630 incidents of trespassing, 1264 incidents of vandalism, and 100 attacks with butyric acid (“stink bombs”)

  27. O’Kay, I checked out those sites. I don’t know if you bothered to read the 8 testimonials from former patients of dr tillers, but a calm and lucid princess did.

    http://www.dr-tiller.com/ladonna.htm
ladonna says, “I will start off by saying that I am still and will more then likely always be Pro Choice, and tho I do respect your decision in being Pro Life and wishing to educate men and women about abortion and your beliefs on it, I do not agree with your methods IE Truth trucks, Graphic Pictures and your basic run of the mill harassment.”
“It was then after a bunch of tests that they were able to tell me that our daughter whom we were expecting in less than a month more then likely had Complete Trisomy 22 a condition incompatible with life. An MRI confirmed that this was true.”
“It was at this time I was allowed to hold my daughter and have her baptized. They recommended I did not look at her because of all the disfigurements she had due to the Trisomy 22. They suggested it would be better for me to just think of her as the perfect little baby I had imagined she would be.”
Ladonna, who is mostly unhappy with the medical care, comes to this conclusion:
“I still believe in a woman’s right to choose, but I think they need to be educated before making that choice.”

    http://www.dr-tiller.com/jeanne.htm
Jeanne says, “I had my one-on-one consultation with him, and I explained to him that I has been raped, and I didn’t feel like I could have the baby, but I wasn’t sure about the abortion either. He asked me if could stand having the baby and giving it up for adoption, not knowing where he was. I said that would be hard on me.”
Jeanne seems to be most unhappy with the way she was treated, comes to this conclusion: “I have permanent cervical scarring from the laminaria that will cause me pain the rest of my life.”

    http://www.dr-tiller.com/cheryl.htm
Cheryl says, “I must say I do not care for the pictures and information about the employees of Dr. Tiller’s clinic. They have an incredibly hard job without additional harassment. Up until August of this year I would’ve considered myself pro-life. I’ve seen so many of the graphic photos of terminations that it just made me ill. I couldn’t imagine why ANY woman would put themselves through such trauma. I always assumed that woman who used any type of termination service were unintended, healthy pregnancies. I now realize things aren’t always black and white.”
“I honestly feel as though Dr. Tiller is not getting positive support. I am grateful to him for making a horrible situation a little more tolerable. He didn’t force us into making a decision. He was able to provide us with information many local/regional doctors were not, and he gave us the option to have some control over the most difficult time in our lives.”
“her deformities were ‘incompatible with life”. If she survived to term and birth, which was very doubtful, our child would be in constant pain and have numerous inoperable conditions.”
“ Dr. Tiller and his staff were absolutely wonderful. We were given the option of having our baby baptized, the option to see/hold/name her, prints of her hands/feet (which I now have her footprints tattooed on my wrist), a certificate of her delivery, the option to take photos and medical xrays.”
Cheryl’s conclusion, “I’m not trying to change your views on termination, but can you honestly tell me that you would/could put your child through this? It seems the most ‘active’ anti-termination people tend to be men, and most often I’m sure they have not had to endure such a difficult situation as this. There isn’t a day that goes by that my heart doesn’t ache. I still have panic attacks when I talk about my darling little girl, not because of Dr. Tiller, but because this type of thing isn’t supposed to happen.”

    http://www.dr-tiller.com/denise.htm
denise gives no explanation why she had an abortion, other than to say this:
“They brought in the chaplain and I found it funny that they were telling me it was ok that I murdered my child. I know I went through the abortion, but by no means am I pro choice. I hate myself for this.”
It seems from the article, her biggest problem was she did not like the way she was treated.

sally says, “During this ultrasound, at 21 weeks, the technician saw what she believed was a congenital diaphragmatic hernia (CDH). In case you weren’t aware, CDH is a condition where the muscle which separates the thorax (chest cavity) and the abdominal cavity does not form completely. The lack of formation leaves hole that in most cases allows the abdominal organs to herniate (move) into the thorax. This severely inhibits lung growth and leaves the child unable to breathe on his/her own.”
“What she (the amnio confirmed it was a girl) did have was a partial deletion of the 4th chromosome, also known as 4p-. This means that a small piece of the short arm of chromosome 4 is missing. This causes what medical professionals call Wolf-Hirshhorn syndrome. This occurs in approximately 1 in 50,000 births.
This syndrome causes some of the most severe mental retardation seen in a genetic disorder, and far more. On to of the CDH that had already been diagnosed, there was a secondary diagnosis of a congenital heart defect resulting in a hole in between the ventricles. Finally, anywhere from 50-90% of diagnosed cases are associated with severe and frequent seizures, not to mention that less than 25% of cases make it to adulthood.”
Salllys conclusion, “I wrote this, not because I feel that you are wrong and that you should stand up for what you believe is right, but because I would like everyone out there who is an anti-Tiller activist to know that he saved my baby girl from living a life of pain that no child should ever go through. I’m not saying I know all about him and everything he has ever done. I’m not saying that he’s perfect and has never done anything wrong, but he made my decision one that I can look back on and know was right, for us at least. My little girl is in a much better place than we. She is happy, healthy, and whole, somewhere we would be lucky to be.”

Jessica says, “I was married at the time & had just had my [4th] child very recently & had become pregnant again as my husband didn’t want to wait. Anyway, we decided having 2 babies under 1 year old was not going to work for us with [5] children total, so after thinking about it we decided upon an abortion though it was painful to think about.”
“The worst part of this ordeal is ever since having this done, I have had NOTHING but problems with my female parts. I have had cervical dysplasia, which is bad cells in your cervix that require many painful treatments. I have pain with sex, which never happened before and just have general hard core cramping on a daily basis. I have doctor statements telling me my abortion caused the problems I now have.”

    http://www.dr-tiller.com/erin.htm
erin says, “I was 12. I was raped by my dad’s friend. I was only a child having a child.”
“I am [17] now, and it hurts to think about it. My son would have been [5] now. I now have a 1-1/2 year old named [Josiah]. Sometimes I think it’s my son that I aborted, and he came back to me.”
IMO, Erin seems to me to have ‘problems’, and the fact that she has a 1 & ½ year old at 17, means that she got pregnant again at 15 & ½ . sounds to me like she is a baby factory.

    http://www.dr-tiller.com/michelle.htm
“On [January 12, 2004] my obstetrician diagnosed my unborn baby with several and severe congenital heart defects and a kidney defect. An amniocentesis didn’t indicate my daughter had any chromosomal abnormalities. He recommended terminating my pregnancy, since the defects were extreme. He also added all the other things that “could” be wrong with her including extremely small arteries, and an unattached abdomen. I was told in the state of [Iowa] (where I live) that I would have to start the termination procedure that day by 5:00pm or go to Kansas.”
Michelle goes on to blame the baby’s father, “my ex-fiance put an obituary in the paper for my daughter citing stillborn. In my opinion to rub it in to me. He is a funeral director and has the power to do something so vicious. He made my life miserable the minute I found out I was pregnant and was relieved when termination was an option. He forced me to terminate. He guilted me into abortion by saying my daughter who is alive will suffer the most if I was in hospitals all the time with the baby, and he mocked me while we were in Wichita, and I was suffering.”

I will let readers come to there own conclusion.
but my opinion, these babies had medical conditions that were too severe.
    rape victims.
and mothers that are too mentally unstable to care for a child.

  28. i should clarify my last statement:
medical conditions that were too severe.
    some were rape victims,
and others that were too mentally unstable to care for a child.
