Onlookers watch gang rape; do nothing

Posted by 1minionsopinion on October 28, 2009

Guess where. If you’re tempted to say it must have happened in some middle Eastern country, you’d be wrong. So so wrong. It happened in California.

Two suspects were arrested and third is being questioned in the gang rape of a California teen outside a high school homecoming dance, police said Tuesday.

The 15-year-old Richmond High School student hospitalized in stable condition after the attack, which happened while as many as 15 people, all males, looked on but didn’t help or call police, investigators said.

The sex assault took place on school grounds Saturday while the dance was under way inside the school, authorities said.

“She was raped, beaten, robbed and dehumanized by several suspects who were obviously OK enough with it to behave that way in each other’s presence,” said Richmond police Lt. Mark Gagan.

“What makes it even more disturbing is the presence of others,” Gagan said. “People came by, saw what was happening and failed to report it.”

Damn straight.

My heart goes out to the victim. I don’t care what she might have done or said to those involved, nobody deserves this kind of act. Nobody.

Assaulted by at least four people, some of which came to her from the crowd to participate in what had to be a sadistic slice of hell for her. What were they thinking? What could they have possibly been thinking?

Police said a “full-court press” was under way, including reviews of Facebook and YouTube, to find other attackers and bystanders who witnessed the rape.

“We’re looking in particular to see if anyone posted any video of the incident,” Gagan said.

Several other individuals were detained but not arrested, Simon said.

The victim was found unconscious under a bench shortly before midnight Saturday after police received a call from someone who overheard people “reminiscing about the incident,” Gagan said.

Police said the girl left the dance and was walking to meet her father for a ride home when a classmate invited her to join a group drinking in the courtyard.

“Right now, we’re looking at toxicology reports to determine her blood-alcohol content and to determine if she was drugged.”

“This just gets worse and worse the more you dig into it,” Gagan told CNN. “It was like a horror movie after looking at the evidence. I can’t believe not one person felt compelled to help her.”

High school is the worst place. Those ppl are hopeless and lifeless and deserve hell. If i had a moment to play God I would smite them. I know i am a christian but my heart goes out to raped victims and I tend to be human when i dont forgive those you commit that atrocity. this enrages me fully…

If you’re wondering about me including a song with it, if you listen to the lyrics, it’s about a guy who either participated in a sexual assault, or stood by and let it happen and how guilty he feels about it later.

I’d never say anyone deserves hell. Everyone who had a piece of her deserves PMITA prison, and a good hard lesson on what it’s really like to have to have sex when you don’t want it.

I don’t know what the bystanders deserve. Some blunt instrument jammed up an orifice and left there for as long as they let the girl get brutalized. And then send them all to the hospital to get the things removed so the hospital has to make a record of it, just like the hospital had to make a record of what happened to that girl. And then they should all have to get together to pay that girl’s hospital bill as well as their own. And they should all have to stand up in front of that girl and her family and apologize from the heart for not caring about her. And maybe, just maybe, they’ll think twice about encouraging violence against women again.

there was a story about a 13yr old high school boy that was repeatedly raped by 4 fellow male classmates, about a month or so ago.
these rapes took place over a period of time and other students also witnessed. i’m not hearing much about that case anymore.

My professor talked about this in my psychology class, when one person is witnessing a crime, this person is more likely to act than if there is a group of people because then people will hope someone else will take action and they don’t feel as bad doing nothing. She gave us a really good tip: if you are attacked in front of witnesses, you need to point someone and ask this specific person for help, he will be more likely to take action and call the police if he feels singled out than if he just feels part of the crowd.
