At least 23 people were crucified – one for the 24th time – in three villages north of Manila as the media recorded every moment from gantries erected around the crosses.

The Roman Catholic Church in the Philippines disapproves of the bloody spectacle that is a mark of the worshippers’ faith, but is powerless to stop the annual ritual. Read the rest of this entry »

Communion Denied for Catholic Gays – Dutch Protest

Netherlands gay protest over Catholic communion snub

Gay activists in church protest 28 February 2010

Hundreds of gay protesters descended on Sunday Mass in Sint-Jan church

Hundreds of Dutch activists have walked out of a Mass in protest at a Roman Catholic policy of denying communion to practising homosexuals.

On this occasion, the church, in ‘s-Hertogenbosch, had already decided not to serve communion, so the protesters left, shouting and singing.

The dispute began earlier this month when a priest in a nearby town refused communion to an openly gay man.

The Netherlands was the first country to introduce gay marriage in 2001.

Most Dutch people support gay rights, but the Roman Catholic Church teaches that homosexual activity is sinful.

This dispute began during Dutch carnival celebrations earlier in February, when the man chosen to be carnival prince in nearby Reusel was refused communion because of his open homosexuality.

The refusal offended many in the local community.

The Sint-Jan church in the city of ‘s-Hertogenbosch, also known as Den Bosch, was prepared for the protest and so decided not to give out Holy Communion during Sunday Mass.

Several hundred demonstrators, dressed in pink wigs and clothes, left the church in protest.

The man at the centre of the row has said he just wants equal treatment – if he is regarded as a sinner, he wants the priest to refuse communion to all other sinners too.

(CNN) — A U.S.-flagged ship that played a central role in a bloody hijacking drama last spring was attacked again Wednesday, a busy day for piracy in the dangerous waters off the east coast of Africa.

The Maersk Alabama came under automatic weapons fire from pirates about 350 nautical miles east of the Somali coast, the European Union’s anti-piracy force said, but fought the attackers off. Read the rest of this entry »

Scientology’s Celebrity Centre in Paris was fined in the ruling

A French court has convicted the Church of Scientology of fraud, but stopped short of banning the group from operating in France.

Two branches of the group’s operations and several of its leaders in France have been fined.

The case came after complaints from two women, one of whom said she was manipulated into paying more than 20,000 euros (£18,100) in the 1990s.

A Scientology spokesman told the BBC the verdict was “all bark and no bite”.

France regards Scientology as a sect, not a religion.

Prosecutors had asked for the group’s French operations to be dissolved and more heavily fined, but a legal loophole prevented any ban. Read the rest of this entry »

Global pirate attacks on the increase

(CNN) — The first nine months of this year has seen more pirate attacks than all of last year. And more than half of those attacks were carried out by suspected Somali pirates, an international maritime watchdog group said Wednesday.

The increase in attacks has forced many countries to patrol pirate hotspots such as the Gulf of Aden.

The increase in attacks has forced many countries to patrol pirate hotspots such as the Gulf of Aden.

“The increased activity in Somalia is the major reason for the spike,” said Cyrus Mody, manager of the International Maritime Bureau, which monitors shipping crimes.

From January 1 until September 30, pirates worldwide mounted 306 attacks, compared with 293 in all of 2008, the Bureau said.

Of the incidents this year, Somali pirates accounted for 54 percent: they launched 168 attacks. Read the rest of this entry »
