Missing Florida Girl’s Family: Pedophile Cousin Took Haleigh Cummings

The family of a little Florida girl who apparently vanished while she was sleeping is afraid she was taken by a pedophile cousin.
The mother and paternal grandmother of 5-year-old Haleigh Cummings said Friday the man in question is a cousin of Misty Croslin, the teenage girlfriend of Haleigh’s father, Ronald Cummings.
Police are questioning the cousin, who is from Tennessee and was visiting when Haleigh disappeared before dawn Feb. 10, according to MyFOXOrlando.com.
“What we’ve been told is that he’s a sexual pedophile,” said Haleigh’s mother Crystal Sheffield. The child’s grandmother, Teresa Neves, said Croslin described him as a “jerk” and she was worried.
“I couldn’t tell you anything about him,” a distraught Neves told reporters Friday, adding that she only knew of the cousin by his first name Joe. “I can’t tell you how they could have taken her from a family that absolutely adores her.”
The family’s plea for the child’s return came as news emerged about a tip from Tennessee called in by a woman claiming to have seen a man in a restaurant with a little girl resembling Haleigh, according to MyFOXOrlando.com.
The tipster, who reportedly phoned Knoxville detectives Sunday, said the man she saw was in a red Toyota RAV4 and appeared to be trying to shield the little girl with him.
Knoxville police said they didn’t locate the car but turned the information over to Florida authorities on the case, according to MyFOXOrlando.com.
Putnam County investigators said they impounded a car in the case, but they wouldn’t give a description of the vehicle, the station reported.
On Thursday a sexual predator was arrested near the trailer home where Haleigh lives with 24-year-old Cummings, 17-year-old Croslin and Haleigh’s little brother Junior.
Police said Timothy R. Loucakis was brought in on charges unrelated to the missing child.
“Word is getting out that we have a sexual predator in custody, and we do, but we have no reason to link it to Haleigh,” said Putnam County Sheriff Jeff Hardy. He said Loucakis missed his curfew, but GPS tracking showed him “within his home zone” — and not near Haleigh — when she reportedly vanished.
Detectives are still “not excluding anybody” as a suspect in the girl’s disappearance, Hardy said.
Loucakis was convicted of “promoting a sexual performance by a child” in May of 2001 and is currently listed as a sexual predator, according to the Florida Department of Law Enforcement Web site.
“What we’re concerned about was he wasn’t where he was supposed to be,” Hardy said.
On Friday, police announced that the reward for information leading to Haleigh had risen to $20,000 but they offered no other details of their progress in solving the mystery.

Authorities have been investigating a tip that casts doubt on a story told by Croslin that she was home when she discovered the child missing. The source said she wasn’t in the trailer when Haleigh vanished last Tuesday. Investigators say they’re looking into the report.
They’re also studying inconsistencies in descriptions of what the girl was last seen wearing. Croslin told them Haleigh had a pink shirt on the night she vanished, but police said this week they have that item of clothing in their possession.
The girlfriend has also reportedly told different stories to cops and the media about the timing of her discovery that Haleigh was gone and where she and the child were that night.
Cummings and Croslin have both taken lie detector tests. They told FOX News they “passed” the polygraphs. Police haven’t released the results.
The family has been at the center of investigations done by the state child welfare agency, but details of those cases haven’t been disclosed because of confidentiality laws.
Neves said her son would never hurt Haleigh and pleaded Friday for her granddaughter’s kidnapper to bring her home.
“I want to say to my baby, we love you sweetheart, and we will find you,” she said through tears.

Why has it taken Misty this long to report that her pedophile cousin was visiting the night Haleigh disappeared…wouldn’t that be the obvious assumption? Her story has changed four or five times, and now she throws her cousin into the mix…seems shady to me. Find him and take him into questioning.

Nellfire you’re right, it does seem fishy for Misty to withhold this information. I keep thinking family secrets are held deep inside, maybe she just didn’t want to think about the possibility. I hope she didn’t have anything to do with this little girls disappearance!

I’ve honestly been appalled by these cases. As a mother of 3 girls, I cannot imagine what these families are going through. I also cannot get over how lenient people are in just allowing “anyone” to be in their home, around their children.
The young girlfriend’s story has bothered me from the beginning. I agree that it is a bit strange to just now be getting information about a pedophile cousin who just happened to be visiting at the time of Haleigh’s disappearance. Croslin may have reported that her cousin was there and that Law Enforcement has since determined he is a registered sexual pedophile. I feel like we somtimes are only getting bits and pieces of information. Regardless, I find it very disheartening she has not been found, but hold onto to hope (and prayers) she is alive. I, for one, am having a hard enough time dealing with what happened to Caylee Anthony.

hey there joy!if it were the girlfriend’s cousin,then maybe haleigh is alive.my wife said i have a very gloomy outlook on this case.it makes my stomach sick just thinking about it.i have said this before but will say this again: if a dog had rabies and bit a child, the dog would be put down because there is no cure.
we know child molesters have the highest repeat of their crime,some argue they can’t be rehabilitated.we know they accumulate over 100 victims on average before they are caught.
the child bitten by the dog will heal quickly after shots are administered and may carry with them a fear of dogs for the rest of their lives.the child who was molested will struggle with healing the rest of their lives and carry emotional scars that may never heal.
when are we americans going to say enough?how many children must be sacrificed?
i do hope this little girl is brought home safely.
my wife is having our first child.we have waited late in life to have a child.i am so excited,but at the same time scared of the world we are bringing this young mind and person into.

Lawman2, it’s hard not to be discouraged by all of this. I can truly understand your position on having children, born into a society that is largely problematic. Kids bring so much joy to your life, it completely changes the landscape of everything . . . I feel I have improved wholeheartedly as a person when I became a mother (even more than having my PhD). Amazing, huh?
I agree with your viewpoint that we are too soft on sexual predators as a society. As you stated, the research shows that they molest and/or sexually abuse extensively before caught. It is a compelling reason to keep them behind bars or administer capital punishment. If we lived in a society where it was truly “an eye for an eye”, there would be a lot less crime.
On another note, I read an article online about how all the media attention is only focusing on “how” these things are happening, not “why” they are happening. It is only after we answer the “why” that we can protect the children and “how” becomes less of an issue.

I also am beginning to wonder if the girlfriend probably did have the child dresed for bed in the pink shirt but then this pervert changed her into street clothes before making off with her. The grandmother said they found the shirt in the dirty clothes basket RIGHT BESIDE THE BACK DOOR…as anybody would have been exiting the trailer. BTW I think Misty left the kids with that jerk Joe… the perv. I also heard Geraldo Rivera report this child had had reports of being abused with bruises etc and had already missed 22 days of school so far this year!!!! This was no wonderful home, no sir.

Since everyone is throwing out theories i have one. first off, right when this happened something was always bothering me and that was someone entering a place they have never been before, i thnik a very high percentage of humans won’t go into someone else house in the middle of the night if they know people are home UNLESS they have been there before. So i really chalk misty up to being 17 and somewhat slow, so lets forget her for the moment. also many people seem to like commiting crimes outside of their area, say someone out of state, it’s much easier for them to get in, do the deed and flee the state quickly. so who knows the house, has been there before and had the opporunity to do it? THE COUSIN who came in from out of state!! Heres why I say so, mistys cousin sheila say that the van was moved that same night, that very likely means someone took her keys, used the van, than returned it, all on the same night the girl disappears. i’ll also bet since misty let sheila borrow the van that sheila also had a key to misty and ronalds house. this also expalins the entry at ronalds house whcih always bothered me, first off how did someone get in and i am sure whoever it was IS familiar with the house and the people inside. wasnt the cousin there at the house earlier that day? he probably overheard misty talking about how ron was at work and was just her and the kids. he really is the only one who knew the place, likely knew what was going on and had the opportunity since sheila only lived a couple of miles away. the reason the police can’t do anything is because the cousin probabyly was already in the van with sheila and so was haleigh at some point so they don’t have anything on him, and no one actually ‘saw’ him take the van, sheila only says she is sure it was not parked that way when she last used it that night. than of course the cousin splits back to his state and the police can’t really do anything. when you look at these events this way than everything starts to fit into place, never mind misty’s changing stories or whatever, i don’t believe for a minute she had anything to do with it, but with the event of the van being gone that night, and the way someone seemed to know the house layout and who was there, i think the police are just waiting for the right evidence to get him, problem is without a body they don’t have anything else to check until either more evidence comes out or the cousin spouts off to someone that he did it. thus why we aren’t seeing any headway on the case, am i the only one here who see’s the puzzle coming together? ps the cousin is a sex offendor also

I am close to this location and must say that with the research I have done on these two (Ronald and Crystal), this is looking more and more like a case of an abusive dad who wielded the courts like a weapon and won.

The news showed Misty Croslin at the river, but wait a minute because Nancy Grace of CNN said adamantly that Misty would never be out of jail in over a hundred years. Wow, at least Nancy is consistent at being wrong. No wonder she was thrown out of Atlanta years ago and cannot practice Law anymore anywhere within any of the 50 states of the United States. (There are small miracles).
