I have to admit I am still a Slumdog Millionaire fan!   My wife teases me, over my having to read the book 3 times and watch the movie 2 times…so far!

images4Vikas Swarup, author of the book on which the film is based captured me up in the colourful tale of how an 18-year-old boy from the slums manages to win one billion rupees on a television game show, was ticking along at a perfectly average rate before Boyle filmed it for the big screen as Slumdog Millionaire, selling some 35,000 copies since publication three years ago, according to book sales monitor Nielsen BookScan.

This ol’ Caveman is so happy over the film’s triumph at last night’s Academy Awards, where it picked up gongs including best film, best director and best adapted screenplay, means sales of the book are set to climb even higher.

If you haven’t read the book… you should!

It’s official–I may have spent too much time in New York City these past few years, because I’m actually beginning to think about things like a New Yorker. For instance, life with our new President Barack Obama is beginning to feel a lot like being in a taxi, stuck in rush hour traffic: You’re not crazy about the guy behind the wheel, not only do you not like where you’re going (you are trapped in Manhattan after all), but you can’t understand the route he’s taking to get you there, and the whole thing is costing you a small fortune. Yes, a cab ride in the big city is like being on The Road to Socialism. Read the rest of this entry »

The operation targeted the trafficking of children for prostitution

US authorities have rescued nearly 50 child prostitutes – some as young as 13 – in a nationwide operation against the trafficking of children for sex.

More than 570 suspects were arrested during the action, which took place over three nights.

FBI agents and local police forces were involved in the operations which spanned some 29 cities.

Officials say a 16-year-old girl who recruits children as prostitutes is being sought as a priority. Read the rest of this entry »

Despite Expected Arrest, Chandra Levy’s Parents Still Grieving

The grief of their daughter’s disappearance hit Robert and Susan Levy like a ton of bricks, a pain that lingers even as authorities announce an imminent arrest in the case.

By the time Chandra Levy’s skeletal remains were found in a park in the nation’s capital a year later, her mother had found enough strength to dial Washington police detectives to ask why it was taking so long to find her daughter’s killer. Read the rest of this entry »

Recession Wipes Away Decade of Gains

Posted by tothewire on February 24, 2009

USA/

Recession and financial fears sent the Dow and S&P 500 on Monday to their worst closing levels since 1997 as the worst economic crisis since the Great Depression has now erased more than a decade’s worth of gains on Wall Street.

The latest bleeding on Wall Street comes as enthusiasm over a new rescue of Citigroup was quickly drowned out by worries about when the economy will recover and what regulators will do to fix the shaky financial system.
