Powerful Democrats No Strangers to Scandal

Posted by tothewire on December 24, 2008

Today, with the Democrats again in firm control of Congress, some of the worst offenders from "Rubbergate" are flourishing. New York Rep. Edolphus Towns (top), who is poised to take over the House Oversight and Government Reform committee, bounced 408 checks between July 1988 and October 1991, according to a congressional investigation into Rubbergate. The panel's previous chairman, Rep. Henry Waxman of California (middle), will take over the House Energy and Commerce Committee. He bounced 434 checks during the period of Rubbergate, investigators found at the time. Rep. John Conyers (bottom) of Michigan is expected to hold on to his gavel as chairman of the House Judiciary Committee. Investigators found that Conyers had written 273 bad checks during the 39 months covered by their probe.

Scandals have ended more than a few careers in Washington. But a look at some of the top Democrats in the new Congress shows a little bad publicity won’t necessarily doom a fellow. Read the rest of this entry »
